No working key? Here's what happens
- You call with the year, make and model. We tell you whether we can do your car (almost always yes), what it will run, and when we can be there.
- We meet the car. Driveway, work site, Santee Lakes campground, the Mission Trails lot: wherever it is sitting. You show ID and the registration.
- We cut from code. Your VIN gives us the key code, and the machine in the van cuts the blade to it. No original needed.
- We program through the OBD port. The car's immobilizer learns the new key and, if you want, forgets the lost ones so they cannot start it if they turn up in the wrong hands.
- You start it, lock it, unlock it. We do not leave until every function works.
Keys we cut and program
- Metal-only keys for older trucks and cars with no chip. Cut and done.
- Transponder keys (the plastic-head key most cars since the late 1990s use). Cut, then programmed so the chip talks to the immobilizer.
- Laser-cut, or high-security, keys with the groove down the middle. Our machine cuts these in the van; the hardware store cannot.
- Flip keys and remote-head keys with the buttons built in. We program the remote functions along with the chip.
- Push-to-start smart keys when every one is lost. This is the job the dealer most wants a tow for, and the one we most often do in a driveway.
Dealer vs. us
The honest comparison: a dealer can make your key, but for an all-keys-lost job they need the car at the dealership, which from Santee means a tow out to El Cajon or down the 8 to Mission Valley, then a wait while the key is ordered. Their key might carry the brand logo; ours starts the car just the same and is usually in your hand the same day, with no tow bill.
Where we send you to the dealer: a handful of late-model European cars whose keys are tied to the factory server, and a few brand-new models with locked-down security gateways we cannot yet reach. We will tell you that on the phone before you spend anything, not after we have driven out.
Trucks, SUVs and the second car
Santee driveways are full of half-ton pickups, three-row SUVs and minivans, and a lot of the trucks are also somebody's office. When a contractor's F-150 loses its only key on a Tuesday, the crew is standing around at a job site off Prospect Ave. We get to work vehicles the same day for that reason, and we handle fleet paperwork if the truck is in a company name.
The same goes for the second car that only leaves the garage for school pickup: one key, one kid, one lost key at the Sportsplex fields, and suddenly nobody can get to practice. Once you have a working key again, add a spare while we are there. It is a fraction of what you just paid.
Ignition trouble
On older vehicles the key sometimes works the doors but will not turn the ignition, or turns only with a wiggle. That is usually a worn ignition cylinder, not a bad key. We can often rekey or repair the cylinder on site so your existing key works again, or replace it and key it to match the doors so you are not carrying two keys. If the steering lock is jammed or the key has snapped off inside, tell us on the phone and we bring the extraction tools.
Still have one working key?
Then you do not need this page. A spare programmed from a working key is faster and cheaper than the all-keys-lost job, because the car already trusts one key and will accept a second without the security wait. Common questions
Do I need the original key?
No. If every key is gone we cut a new one from the code tied to your VIN and program it to the car on the spot. If you still have one working key, tell us: that is a cheaper spare-key job, and we would rather sell you the smaller one.
What documents do I need?
Photo ID and proof the car is yours or you are authorized to have a key made: registration, title, insurance card or a rental or fleet agreement in your name. We check these on every key job, and a locksmith who does not is a locksmith you do not want making keys in Santee.
Can you do it at night?
We work until 9pm every day, Sunday included. After that, text us and we will reply by 8am with a time. Most all-keys-lost jobs take an hour or less, so an 8am visit usually has you driving well before lunch.
Will a locksmith key void my warranty?
No. Under federal law a manufacturer cannot void a warranty because an independent shop did the work. We program through the same diagnostic port the dealer uses and follow the manufacturer procedure for your model.
How long does it take?
Plain metal keys take minutes. A transponder or laser-cut key with programming usually takes 30 to 60 minutes including the security wait some cars impose. A push-to-start car with every key lost can take a little longer while the immobilizer accepts the new key. We tell you the estimate on the phone.
